HPI Group sold to DAI

Global development company DAI has acquired the HPI Group, which consists of Health Partners International (HPI) and WISE Development. BCMS acted as advisor to the shareholders of the HPI Group.

Based in Lewes, Sussex, UK, HPI is a partnership that specialises in health systems, governance, and community engagement in low- and middle-income countries. It is committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable health care services accessible for all. WISE Development works with international agencies, NGOs, and government institutions in the United Kingdom and worldwide to drive gender equality and empower women and girls.

“Without BCMS’ wise, timely and focused inputs, I doubt we could have successfully completed the deal” – Rodion Kraus, HPI Group

HPI has delivered more than 200 health projects in 40 countries over the past two decades, with an emphasis on strengthening domestic health systems—the most sustainable way of saving lives at scale. The firm is particularly strong in immunisation, nutrition, malaria and other communicable diseases, sexual and reproductive health, family planning, and maternal, newborn, and child health.

Founded in 1970, DAI is a global development company with corporate offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Belgium. Named one of the world’s top 40 international development innovators, DAI works on the front lines of international development, tackling fundamental social and economic development problems caused by inefficient markets, ineffective governance, and instability.

Perspectives on the deal

“Like DAI, these companies are employee-owned and mission-driven,” said Chris LeGrand, President of DAI Global Health. “Coming together under the DAI banner will expand DAI’s service offering in the global health arena and augment our strengths in women’s and gender issues across the DAI portfolio. We look forward to bringing the benefits of Britain’s extraordinary health expertise to communities and markets all around the world.”

Rodion Kraus, Managing Director, HPI, commented: “The BCMS team played a significant role in helping us reach agreement with DAI. Quite frankly, without your wise, timely and focused inputs, I doubt we could have successfully completed the deal.”

Creating lasting change: key HPI Group successes

Over three years in Northern Nigeria, 172,000 women and children’s lives were saved and 259,783 children were fully immunised. The Women for Health programme selects girls from remote societies in rural Northern Nigeria with the help of their community. They are trained as health workers to staff their community’s health facility, and particularly to be skilled birth assistants and midwives for pregnant women in the area. The programme is funded by UK aid from the Department for International Development (DfID) in support of MDG 4 (the reduction of child mortality) and MDG 5 (the reduction of maternal mortality) and is managed by Health Partners International, Save the Children and GRID Consulting Ltd.

Skilled birth attendance rates increased 43% (to 70%) over one year in rural Zambia. The MORE MAMaZ project aims to increase the use of maternal and newborn health services among rural communities in Zambia. The project is achieving transformational change for women and girls, particularly those who are under-supported at household and community level, by supporting government partners to scale up HPI’s community engagement approach. The project is implemented in support of the Comic Relief Maanda Initiative theme of improved health for women aged 15-49 and children under five.
