WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS BACKGROUND?

I’ve had a fairly diverse commercial background, which works well at BCMS. I held a series of management roles with medium-sized organisations, before getting involved in co-founding start-ups. This was an invaluable experience, as it helps me to wear our clients’ shoes, and I have a good sense of what is involved in getting a business off the ground.

I started in engineering initially, including for a telecoms firm. This then led into the technology space, and subsequently sales and marketing roles. I come from a family with a background in entrepreneurship and business, so, founding a business wasn’t too alien a concept!  

For the start-ups I was involved in, I took on the responsibility for financial matters, which means I know how finances work in small businesses.  My training and experience has been supplemented by the deal negotiation roles I have worked in since joining BCMS in 2012. 

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT BCMS?

I manage one of the experienced deal-making operations teams. As a former Lead Advisor myself, I am on hand to manage negotiations, information flow, and help in ‘closing’ a deal successfully. BCMS Lead Advisors have to be part diplomat, part counsellor, part advisor, part politician and part enforcer, in order to control all the factors that could prevent a successful deal from being struck. 

HOW DOES YOUR ROLE ADD VALUE TO BUSINESS OWNERS?

We have the ability as Lead Advisors to build relationships with the prospective acquirers and, if we’re smart, we can push them as far as we can get them without affecting a relationship and risking the deal. As a third party, BCMS is able to be dispassionate and unemotional when it comes to the deal-making process.

WHAT’S THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT LIKE AT BCMS?

We’re quite a collaborative bunch. There’s a friendly atmosphere around the business and I enjoy the camaraderie. The great thing is there are several teams of specialists that pool together to form teams for each project, so you get to work with lots of different people quite closely. 

As far as corporate finance goes, BCMS is quite a caring environment, and there is a good understanding of the importance of work-life balance.

WHAT ASPECTS OF YOUR WORK DO YOU ENJOY MOST?

Variety: no one week looks like another. You can have days and weeks of office-based work, getting involved in the preparation and due diligence phases, with a high information flow to manage, and you can have days and weeks where you’re barely sitting down except in meetings with prospective acquirers. 

WHAT ARE BCMS’ CORE VALUES?

It weighs heavily on me and others at BCMS that selling a business is a one-off, life-changing event for our clients. Not to take that seriously would be a grave misjudgement.
