Robert Spenceley talks to us about life post sale, and gives advice to business owners looking to sell

What is life like, post sale?

I’ve got involved in property development. I’ve got three different businesses: one is my own; one is with two friends; another is with a business partner. It’s still too early to do nothing. I’ve got a daughter who was 13 and a boy who was 14 at the time, and I’ve been able to have three solid years with them at quite an important time of their lives.

What advice would you give to someone looking to sell?

Take your time. If you’re in the fortunate position of being able to plan the sale of your business, don’t rush. A business needs to be prepared for sale. Make sure you can easily access any data that a seller’s going to want, putting your fingers on contracts or warranties. It is a case of being able to present yourself professionally. The cleaner your business is, the more you will get for it.
