Primed for growth: The Amazon Growing Business Awards 2016
Thanks to our friends at Real Business, BCMS was privileged to be among the guests at last night’s prestigious Amazon Growing Business Awards, held at the Brewery, in the City of London.
Even in awards season, where every other evening seems to bring a black-tie do, this is a stand-out event. Supported by the CBI, and with blue-chip sponsors including BMW and Bupa, it celebrates the best of British innovation and entrepreneurship.
Nominees were drawn from across every conceivable sector, each having carved out its specialist niche, in disciplines ranging from laser machining to employee scheduling software, digital marketing, loan management, pet food, 3D imaging, and primary-age education. As CBI president Paul Drechsler said in his keynote speech: “Tonight is a demonstration of why the UK is the most exciting place to do business in the world.”
Among the specialist SMEs included names that have quickly become significant consumer brands, including online reviews site Feefo, snack brand ProperCorn and retailer Notonthehighstreet.com.
It was fascinating to hear, too, how many of these dynamic businesses shared a similar backstory: small start-ups, who began to think big. Take the global online travel business founded in the CEO’s Wandsworth attic, the marshmallow company started with just £250, or the brilliantly named BubbleBum, a family travel aid company started in 2009 by a mum concerned for her kids’ in-car safety. Her company’s products are now sold through a variety of channels including Halfords, John Lewis. Amazon, and Walmart in the US.
In a year of economic and political uncertainty, it’s good to know one thing remains the same. Here in the UK entrepreneurs will continue to innovate, and inspire - and that’s something worth celebrating.
